Manny McIvor of Portland submitted the winning design, earning tickets to Stumptown Comics Fest and a cash prize. His costume, named “Samdroid” (above), will be fabricated by The Alter Egos Society and worn by the Mayor on April 16th at the comics fest, held at the Oregon Convention Center. The costumed Mayor will pose for pictures with fest attendees at the Alter Egos Society booth from 3-4pm to help raise money for p:ear, a local non-profit whose mission is to mentor homeless youth. Many super designs were submitted, including “Comic Man” by first runner up Mara, a 5th grade member of the Sunnyside Comic Club.

Project Mayor-Man is presented by Stumptown Comics Fest and The Alter Egos Society, and is sponsored by comics retailer Things From Another World. The contest and its contributors thank the Mayor for being a good sport and helping raise awareness of the cultural and economic importance of the local comics industry.

Setting the stage for a quest of epic proportions, Mayor Sam Adams is scheduled to attend Stumptown Comics Fest 2011, and he needs the city’s help to make sure he appears in a suitable superhero alter ego!

Operating as code name: PROJECT MAYOR-MAN, the minds behind the Stumptown Comics Fest and the Alter Egos Society have teamed up to clad our good sport of a mayor in proper attire, and they seek the creative minds of Portland to help design the right costume concept.

“Portland’s designers are up to this challenge,” said Benja Barker, founder of the Alter Egos Society. “This challenge will highlight the incredible creative talent we have in Portland, from the fashion industry to the visual arts community and beyond.”

The quest to design our mayor’s original superhero costume will begin February 1 and run through the month, with submissions closing on February 28.

Attendees will have the opportunity to have their picture taken with the costumed mayor as well as purchase prints featuring Mayor Sam Adams in his original superhero costume, with proceeds going to benefit the local non-profit p:ear, which provides services for homeless and transitional youth.

The winning designer will have free access to all Stumptown Comics Fest events, with additional prizes to be announced.

The top PROJECT MAYOR-MAN designs will be announced March 7th, with the winning costume design turned over to the talented costumers of the Alter Egos Society for fabrication.

More information and contest details will be posted as available.

Well well well, now THAT was quite an event! The Alter Egos Society had a blast at the 7th annual Stumptown Comics Fest this past weekend. When we found out that we’d be sharing a table with our friends Atomic Arts (producers of “Trek In The Park”),we knew it would be a good time.

During the Fest, we had a few different AES volunteers staffing the booth and—whether hero or villain—being friendly with people who stopped by. In addition to the previously mentioned Membership Signup, we were also selling DVDs of ARCHIVES OF THE FANTASTIC, tshirts, and patches, all things which we hope to have for sale on the website soon!

Dr. Megahertz is looking happy about that error screen! He would, too. Photo by Merrick Monroe.

We also had a screen set up for people to view the newest AES promotional video and the remixed ARCHIVES trailer (and headphones so they could listen without annoying our neighboring booths), which seemed to draw a lot of people in. Children especially seemed interested in the whole masks-and-capes thing, many of them being familiar with the likes of Batman and Superman (as well they should be!). Our representatives did a great job interacting with children both big and small, and getting the super word out.

For more pictures from the Stumptown Comics Fest 2010, check out our AES-centric AES at Stumptown Comics Fest 2010 Flickr gallery, or the Stumptown Comics Fest 2010 Flickr group pool for photos that may or may not feature awesome superheroes or supervillains. And hopefully we’ll see you again next year, Stumptown comics fans!

A tongue-in-cheek labor of love by local artists to bring colorful characters to the screen, ARCHIVES OF THE FANTASTIC was created by the costume events group The Alter Egos Society as an all-volunteer Portland original. Billed as an amateur short film of epic proportions, the movie does more than satisfy our inner nerdiness; On Saturday, July 25, at 2 pm, ARCHIVES OF THE FANTASTIC will premiere at the Bagdad Theater as part of the Alter Egos Society’s mission to celebrate superheroes and to raise money for p:ear.

Directed by Benja Barker and Daniel Miller of Southeast Portland, ARCHIVES OF THE FANTASTIC was filmed over the past year in Portland with an all volunteer cast and crew. The film is a DIY effort that includes some professional elements such as miniature models and a score by local composer Paul Evans (From One Rose: The Story of the Rose Festival).

In ARCHIVES OF THE FANTASTIC, three heroes track their respective enemies as those enemies try to thwart the heroes and control the world. Above the earth an alien archivist narrates the tale as the conflict threatens the fate of the world.

After the movie, a representative from p:ear will talk about their mission and the work they do. p:ear is known for building positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth, ages 15 to 24, through education, art and recreation that affirms personal worth, creating more meaningful and healthier lives. Each year their programs serve more than 350 homeless and transitional young people in Portland.

This event is a collaborative effort between DrunkenRampage.com and the Alter Egos Society to encourage creativity and merrymaking and to raise interest in the 2nd annual charity event, ALTER EGOS: Hero/Villain Ceasefire Party in the Fall of 2008.

Beginning at 6pm villains and heroes will start downtown in different bars (The Crown Room and R Palate, respectively) before the opposing forces face off for drinks at Blitz and CC Slaughters.

Activities and contests will include a dance-off between good and evil, and “You’ve Met Your Match” (finding your arch-nemesis, speed dating style). Prizes for contests will be provided by Stumptown Comics Foundation, Bridge City Comics, Cosmic Monkey Comics, and Floating World Comics. Participants must come costumed as heroes or villains of their own creation (to avoid ridicule as an obvious knockoff). They are also required to bring a valid ID and are encouraged to bring cash.
